How to Measure Registers and Grilles

How to Measure Floor Registers and Grilles, Wall Returns and Registers, and More!

FLOOR:

  • First, determine whether you need a return air grille or a register for your floor.  Registers have dampers to open and close air flow, whereas returns do not.

  • Measure the hole opening in your floor and place your order based on that size.  For example, if the hole opening in your floor is 10" x 10", place your order for a 10" x 10".  The overall faceplate dimensions will keep the item in place.

RECTANGULAR BASEBOARD:

  • First, determine whether you need a return air grille or a register for your floor.  Registers have dampers to open and close air flow, whereas returns do not.

  • Measure the hole opening in the wall in your baseboard area and place your order based on that size. For example, if the hole opening in the baseboard area is 10" x 6", place your order for a 10" x 6".  The overall faceplate dimensions will be larger in order to mount in place.  The depth to wall for baseboard registers and returns are 7/8".  Ensure that you're ordering for the correct application.

TRIANGULAR BASEBOARD:

  • First, determine whether you need a return air grille or a register for your baseboard.  Registers have dampers to open and close air flow, whereas returns do not.

  • If your triangular baseboard register or return measures 15", 18" or 24" exactly in length - place your order based on that size.  Keep in mind that there are different height and base projections available.  Therefore, place an order for the correct length and the closest options available for the height and base projection.

  • If your triangular baseboard register or return does not qualify for the standard 15", 18", or 24" exactly, then remove the existing register or return vent.  Measure the hole opening and place your order based on that size.  For example, if your triangular baseboard measures 10" x 6", please your order for the 10" x 6".  Please also keep in mind the base projection will differ between manufacturers.  Match that size up, along with the hole opening that you currently have.

SIDEWALL / CEILING:

  • First, determine whether you need a return air grille or a register for your sidewall/ceiling area.  Registers have dampers to open and close air flow, whereas returns do not.

  • Measure the hole opening in your sidewall/ceiling and place your order based on that size.  For example, if the hole opening in your sidewall/ceiling is 10" x 10", place your order for a 10" x 10".  The overall faceplate dimensions will be larger in order to mount in place.  The depth to wall for sidewall/ceiling registers and returns are smaller than said of a baseboard vent.  Ensure that you're ordering for the correct application.
